“Pre-digested” is a helpful way to understand ultra-processed foods, credit to Post Reports. I’ve always imagined my stomach as a gas tank with volume sensors. That’s partly true; if you chow down you will feel full. But satiety is more complicated. Recent research and reporting explain how the digestive system wants fiber to munch on, and the munching process stimulates the release of hunger-regulating hormones. This can affect how soon you’ll want your next meal and how much you’ll eat. Also, all calories are not equal. Your body won’t fully digest all of the fibrous food you eat; you’ll absorb more calories from ultra-processed (pre-digested) food than from high-fiber foods. Now that I can imagine my poor lower intestine and its microbes waiting for fiber to nosh on, I don’t want to let it down. It’s been through a lot.
